W.A. Production offers the Screamo ($39 value) creative sound design effect as a free download for all BPB readers until January 31st, 2021.
Screamo is a multi-effect plugin for music producers and sound designers. It combines the power of distortion, filtering, and modulation to enrich boring sounds with motion and character. The basic idea behind the Screamo plugin is to transform and enhance the input signal with just a few clicks. Its modulation capabilities aren’t on par with specialized plugins from developers like Cableguys, but Screamo puts a more efficient twist on the modulation tool concept.
The plugin integrates filtering and distortion with a user-friendly modulation workflow. You won’t find any custom LFO curves or other modulation gymnastics, but there’s still some room for customization in the LFO section. The overall result is a sound design tool that’s both versatile and easy to use.
Taking a closer look at the interface, Screamo has six control knobs and an output gain control, along with a pair of volume monitors. The Smear knob controls a pair of resonant filters that are responsible for a distorted talkbox-style effect. The Drive knob distorts the signal, delivering soft saturation or heavy overdrive, depending on your settings.
Screamo features three different variations of the Smear effect and three different distortion modes. Select the desired processing mode by clicking the circle next to the corresponding control knob.
The bottom row hosts the LFO controls, including the waveform shape, modulation speed, and smoothness. This is where you’ll animate the effects described above, running in sync with your digital audio workstation and your project’s BPM setting.
Screamo lets you create custom modulation effects from scratch or use one of the 25 available presets as the starting point. The included presets are fun to try, but Screamo is so easy to use that everyone should try putting their sound designer hats on and start rotating those FX knobs.
